exile shiraz

Introduction

Exile is named after the CD ‘Exile on Main Street’ by the Rolling Stones. It is sourced from some of the oldest and finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley.

The Winemaking

The bulk of the fruit for our 2011 Exile was sourced for the second consecutive year from an old vineyard in Marananga, which is dry grown and feature vines up 100 years of age. The vines that make up Exile are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting, finally producing just one and a half tonne to the acre. Exile grapes are all hand picked and the grapes are selected in individual batches by the winemaker and vigneron. The grapes are transported to the winery and are fed through the gravity flow winery prior to being fermented in old concrete fermenters after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak, and are then aged for 24 months before final barrel selection, blending and bottled with minimal filtration.

Tasting Notes

Fragrant and expressive on the nose with obvious notes of raspberry, plum, earth and smoke with some attractive floral hints. There is a typical earthy note running through the bouquet, which we have come to expect from Exile Shiraz. Shiraz fruit sweetness dominates the palate, followed by hints of vanilla and smoke from the new French oak. Ever evolving when allowed to breathe with more earthy notes with some leather saddle and lead pencil shavings also being a highlight when allowed some time prior to consuming.
