Introduction
Exile is named after the CD 'Exile on Main Street' by the Rolling Stones. It is a single vineyard wine based on the oldest and finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley.
Tasting Notes
Fragrant and expressive on the nose with obvious notes of raspberry, plum, earth and smoke with some attractive floral hints. There is a typical earthy note running through the bouquet. Fruit sweetness dominates the palate, followed by hints of vanilla and smoke from the new French oak. Ever evolving when allowed to breathe with more earthy notes with some leather saddle and lead pencil shavings also being a highlight when allowed some time prior to consuming.
The Winemaking
Exile comes from only the finest vineyards in the Barossa's west, in my opinion the western Barossa is where the great grapes are grown. Colonial Estate had the great advantage of using grapes from the premium sub regions here and more importantly from some of the Barossa's oldest vines up to 140 years old which wineries all over would die for. I have no issue saying that the grapes used in Exile would make the icon grading system for grapes and the way the grapes are treated both on the vine and after picking is something to marvel at.
