Introduction
Alexander Gordon Laing was yet another explorer from Scotland who traipsed around West Africa in the 18th century. Our Alexander Laing Grenache owes its existence to the blocks of weather beaten bush vines that survived the vine-pull at the end of the last century.
Tasting Notes
This Grenache is light bright crimson purple in colour with quite intense aromatics of earth and spice, together with a hint of rose petal and turkish delight. Concentrated rich red and black berry as well as plum characters are quite dominant with underlying notes of pepper and spice. There are subtle hints of raspberry and red liquorice flavours, with a backbone of finely grained tannins and oak.
The Winemaking
Alexander Laing is sourced from a single vineyard in Greenock on the far North-Western slopes of the Barossa Valley. The Grenache from Alexander Laing vineyard manifests itself as small berries on small bunches that are packed with flavour. That, coupled with old vines that have already proved their provenance, gave us a perfect base. At dawn, the grapes were handpicked then de-stemmed. Fermentation, like our top wines Exile and Émigré, was conducted in vats, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels.
