Introduction

Whilst the name Émigré continues in the same vein as the Exile, there is a big difference in the style and make-up of the wine. Exile is a single vineyard wine, whereas Émigré is the opposite in that it comes from an array of vineyards across the Barossa. In addition, Exile is Shiraz rooted whilst Émigré mainstay is Grenache.

Tasting Notes

Deep maroon to bright crimson in colour. A vibrant Grenache based blend with sweet raspberry fruit, ripe plums with subtle fine-grained oak tannins and cassis all feature to create an alluring bouquet. A full bodied wine with highly concentrated fruit flavour that is rounded, juicy and balanced with ripe dark fruits, plums, cassis and a touch of spicy pepper. The oak is integrated perfectly with fruit to create complexity on the palate, silky smooth finish with a rounded edge from tannin and natural fruit acid giving length.

The Winemaking

Émigré from the outstanding 2015 vintage is made up of 3 varieties: Grenache, Shiraz & Mataro. Only four previous vintages have had this majority make up although we feel it is the best. Sourced from an array of vineyards across the Barossa from 4 main vineyards – two in cool climates, Greenock and Eden Valley, and the other two from the northern Barossa Valley. Like Exile the vines are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting producing less than 3 tonne to the acre. Émigré grapes are then hand picked and transferred to the winery. The wine receives extreme cold maceration and in a first we co-fermented the different varieties to ensure complete integration, which has worked amazingly. Malolactic ferment occurred in new French oak, and thereafter in the same oak the wine spent an extended time aging and further developing as one singular wine despite being 3 varieties.
